Slashdot Science Story | Scientists Create Artificial Meat.

I don’t think I like the idea of this at all. I think most of us are already too far removed from the source of our food. I like knowing my burger came from a cow and my bacon from a pig. This just sounds too much like something from a Kurt Vonnegut short story.

William Gibson envisioned a whole industry of “Vat Grown” meat products in his novels. In the past, people assumed it was a fungal product, but I like to think of it as actual “meat”. (Which is what Gibson actually intended.)

Hell, if it tastes good, we will all eat it.

Funny, when I read this story at /. this morning it was served up with an ad for “Burgers’ Smokehouse” featuring a large Turkey. “Holiday Meals Made Easy” indeed.

I wonder if future children will have “Grow your own meat” as a modern-day equivalent to the home science lab kits I played with as a child.
