Pearl Harbor

On this day of remembrance I cannot help but recall my visit to Pearl Harbor last year. I may have discussed this before. If so please pardon the memory lapse.

As many of you know I served in the United States Navy for just under 8 years. I met some really great people while I was in and I went to Pearl Harbor hoping to feel a connection with those that were there that fateful day in 1941. I saw some exhibits that intrigued me, and read many stories of heroism, but something didn’t seem right. I kept comparing Pearl Harbor to the Peace Memorial Park in Okinawa, Japan and I couldn’t help but feel that Pearl Harbor does not do the best job of honoring those lives that were lost or forever changed that day. It has become an overtly commercial enterprise and that saddens me.

So I won’t return and would not tell anyone visiting Hawaii that it is a must visit. I find what has been done there to be quite disrespectful.

To those that were there that day, whether you are here on Earth with us or not, I thank you for your service.
